GHOST OF YOTEI REVIEW

Ghost of Yotei is a good sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Gameplay is expanded, featuring a wider range of weapons and new tools, including the ability to throw enemy weapons back at them. The open world looks as beautiful as the original one, and the presence of Mount Yotei adds depth and charm. However, some of the animations, especially movement animations, feel stiff. The main character feels lifeless. The enemy variety should have been better. Audio feels slightly lacking and less memorable compared to the first entry.

I particularly enjoy the gameplay the most; that is what games are all about. The new tool, bomb, is extremely powerful. You can easily take out multiple enemies with it. I enjoy using the spear the most. The gameplay flow is similar. You clear out random enemies in the open world and clear out the outposts. The default horse riding speed is still too slow. While the battle animations are smooth, the enemies still dodge your attacks awkwardly. The attack cancel animation abruptly stops the incoming enemy attack.

The combat requires a lot of polish, as it still feels weightless and lacks proper animation flow, especially during certain manoeuvres. However, my main issue, besides the boring main character, is a noticeable downgrade in gameplay. While they have added new weapons, they have removed the multiple stance system. This makes the gameplay more linear and lacks the depth which the first game had.

I found the NPCs way more interesting than the main character. Some of the memorable characters are actually the NPCs for me. The Japanese painterly colourful art style looks great. I often stop to take some screenshots. Even from the ground, the addition of Mount Yotei enhances the beauty of the graphics. Ultimately, it is a good sequel, but I still prefer the previous game. The story, characters, and gameplay from the first game are overall better. The Ghost of Yotei feels repetitive and generic.
