METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER
METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is an excellent remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. The game reminded me of why I liked the original the most in the entire series. The game features fantastic gameplay, graphics, and audio, and although it has some shortcomings in the character and story departments, it's all OK considering it's a video game.
GAMEPLAY
Tactical Espionage Action. Stealth is the core of the gameplay. While you can kill enemies, there are penalties to it. I finished the game on normal difficulty, so while I cannot go into detail about other modes, the game felt fairly easy. None of the bosses felt hard, though some can be very tricky, as the game seems to focus on your wits too. The forest setting is very fun, with shorter sections to progress through. However, after halfway through, the levels start getting more complex. There is a wide variety of traversal, from forest to industrial complex to sewer. You have to explore to collect weapons, ammo, and rations. You will need to eat food at regular intervals. You will also need to heal at times, but luckily you have enough healing items for pretty much the whole game. Though the game is not focused on action, there is a very good on-rails cinematic shooter gameplay that surpasses even the modern Uncharted games. I was very surprised to note that a game from the PS2 era had better on-rail action set pieces. Boss fights were the most enjoyable parts of the game for me. I got the Jaguar trophy in the end.
GRAPHICS & AUDIO
The game has outstanding graphics, with a much better implementation of Unreal Engine 5. Though it does suffer from very tiny slow motions at certain places. Particularly the lake sections. Fantastic audio; you hear the forest ambience in full detail, including the chirping of birds. Character models are fairly detailed, as are the textures. Most of the cutscenes are eye candy.
STORY
The story is fairly straightforward with complex twists. There are things like double agents and double-crosses. Though it has a sad theme, it still manages to generate a lot of curiosity in the player.
OVERALL
Playing the remake reminded me why Metal Gear Solid 3 is my favorite in the series. It's one of the best remakes made and certainly worth playing if you are a fan of the Metal Gear series or Stealth games.
