Resident Evil Requiem

The Resident Evil series is one of my favorite series in video gaming. The zombie enemies (whenever I see zombies in any form of media, it reminds me of this series), save room themes, and iconic characters all left a lasting impression. Here is my assessment of each Resident Evil game, based on my personal preferences.

<1> Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil Remake: I started with this one, and I remember most, if not all, of the game. The pre-rendered left a remarkable impression. The game is more about exploration and puzzle than action, but the action bits remain consistent. The game is more intense than scary. Managing limited ammo and the save ribbons keeps things tense. The remake of this game features incredible graphics with a realistic pre-rendered art style. The game features a memorable mansion as the setting. There are many pathways with puzzles. The cast is iconic. You can gather more details about the story from the various notes you find. There are unique mini-bosses that you will encounter throughout the game.

<2> Resident Evil 2: The second game in the series has a decent balance of action and puzzles. It features a new cast, a different, more open setting, new enemies, and a longer length compared to the 1st game. The game features two playable characters, just as the first game. The base starting area is as memorable as the mansion setting from the 1st game. The park area is one of my favorite parts of the game.

<3> Resident Evil 3: This game is more similar to the 2nd game. Jill Valentine from the first game returns. It also features some iconic locations, such as the St.Michael clock tower. The game has an excellent ending. The game features a new mode called Mercenaries. This game introduced a feature similar to quick-time events. This game is also more action-oriented. The ending sequence is what I remember the most from this game, along with the iconic entrance of Jill.

<4> Resident Evil 4: I consider this game a perfect game. It has a lot of action, a completely new setting, and new enemies. The pacing is consistent and exciting. Leon from the 2nd game returns as the main playable character. The game is thrilling and features a good story. It had the widest range of enemies and weapons in the series till that time. Mercenaries mode returns with many more playable characters and stages. From the start, the game gave me a special feel.

<5> Resident Evil 5: Co-op focused gameplay. Chris from the first game returns, and Jill has a cameo, but she is playable in the mercenaries mode. Mercenaries mode is better compared to Resident Evil 4, as it has a multiplayer mode where you can play with and against other players. New enemies and a setting with even more focus on action compared to the previous game. The game is fun and has very high replayability.

<6> Resident Evil 6: Mercenaries mode returns. Co-op-focused gameplay, and this time, the gameplay is vastly expanded. New enemies and a new setting. The game has too many quick-time events. High replayability adds value. Too many cutscenes and cinematic sequences weigh the game down a bit. To me, the story seemed to be the weakest in the series.

<7> Resident Evil Code Veronica: This game felt more like a side game to me. It retains the gameplay style from the first game, with some refinements. But the cast is interesting and memorable. It is certainly worth playing.

<8> Resident Evil 0: Nice graphics and pre-rendered graphics. Two playable characters, but with a twist that you can control both at regular intervals. The opening train sequence is what I enjoyed the most, and later, the game features a mansion similar to Resident Evil 1. Rebecca, who made a cameo in the first one, is one of the main playable characters here.

<9> Resident Evil 7: New setting and enemies. It was a big change due to the first-person view and a different approach to gameplay. The story is interesting. The game is scarier compared to previous entries. I would say that it doesn’t have good replay value. More puzzle-oriented and less action. Interesting characters added value.

<10> Resident Evil Village: Again, a new setting and enemies. It has the same main cast as the previous entry. Similar gameplay as well. The game features more puzzles. The game has intense moments, but the story was very weak. The only saving grace for the story was the ending. The game is more difficult than the previous games. Castle exploration was limited, but the overall setting still felt memorable. You wander in various parts of the village, and some of the parts are scary.

I feel like having Umbrella returned and involved will do better for the series. Umbrella Corporation has been a vital part of the series for me. The upcoming game, Resident Evil Requiem, potentially involves the return of the Umbrella Corporation.
