These days, graphics are increasingly realistic, thanks to the various engines that are making games more and more visually high-fidelity. Among older generations, we have observed various types of graphics that will always look good. In terms of the most realistic graphic style, I believe that the pre-rendered graphics are most realistic. Then there are the cel-shaded graphics that will always look clean, detailed, and shiny.
Examples of highly pre-rendered graphics exist all the way back to the PlayStation era and even in many older Computer games. The ones that I remember the most are from Resident Evil games. In PC games, I enjoyed the 2D, hand-painted backgrounds with an isometric perspective art style seen in games like Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive. Some of the games from the Resident Evil series featured water flow graphics in a pre-rendered art style that looks more realistic compared to 3D graphics.
The pre-rendered art style, which in most cases is 2D images combined in a 3D background, is one of the unique ways to showcase high-quality, realistic graphics regardless of the respective hardware’s graphical prowess. These days, we see a lot of Chromatic look in various forms of media, not just in games. But it clearly stands out as a filter that makes the actual lightning look dull, as it has a dark shade. In comparison, Cel-shaded graphics actually enhance the lighting and overall graphics, and work as a very good filter/overlay for graphics. Cel-shaded art makes the graphics stand out better, making the visuals look fuller, and also works as one of the best artistic styles. Whereas the pre-rendered art style is one of the best forms of realistic graphics, and instead of 3D graphics and textures, the various forms of pre-rendered objects does not only make the graphics look very realistic, but can also aid in better game performance. Resident Evil remake from 2002 is a perfect example of high quality pre-rendered graphics that looks very realistic as well as pleasing when compared to 3D graphics.
